Wild Horse Ranch is a large-lot subdivision consisting of about 350 lots located in the northeast corner of Catron County in New Mexico bordering Cibloa County to the north.
It is an area rich in history and culture and is located at an elevation of about 7,800 feet, providing us with an opportunity to enjoy four beautiful seasons. This makes it an attractive area for people in the low desert areas to escape the summer heat, although property landowners come from all over the country. Our landowners are made up of permanent residents, seasonal residents, occasional residents and investors.
Subdivision lots range from about 20 acres and up, and most are covered with Juniper and pine trees. Wildlife is abundant in the area and we have learned to co-habitate with bear, elk, deer, bobcats, fox, and mountain lions. We also have wild burros and antelope in the area. The variety of birds in the area is fascinating. Hummingbirds are plentiful and eagle sightings are not uncommon.
The community has an active volunteer fire department and a pavilion for social gatherings. The summer months find most of our residents busy with gardening and enjoying the outdoors.
Fall is time to harvest and prepare for the winter. Wild Horse Ranch is located a little over one hour from any major shopping, so we learn to live with what we have, to share what we have, and to stock up as much as possible. It's a different life than city living but it is also very rewarding.
